The clinic aims to help with the lack of football officials and support those looking to enhance their skills and progress. It's scheduled for May 4 at Scranton High School.
Experienced college and high school clinicians, along with officials of all experience levels, will come together for the event. The day will conclude with participation in Lackawanna College’s spring football game at Scranton Memorial Stadium.
Bill Schoen, a Division I college football official and clinic director, stressed the importance of training and opportunities for new and less experienced officials. The panel of presenters aims to encourage people to join football officiating, help current officials improve, and support others in reaching the next level.
The featured presenters include Dennis Crim, supervisor of football officials for various conferences, Patrick Gebhart, associate executive director and officiating supervisor of the PIAA, and Paul Sheehan, a Division I football official and former PIAA statewide rules interpreter.
Local assignors scheduled to present include Ted Anderson from Lackawanna League, Joe Pizano from Wyoming Valley Conference, Jim Haney, a supervisor for football and basketball in the Allentown area, and Brian Albertson, a collegiate and high school official from the Williamsport area.
Mark Duda, Lackawanna College head football coach, will also speak, highlighting the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of football officiating before the 1 p.m. spring game.
Schoen mentioned that the topics will cover position mechanics, play calling philosophies, using film review to improve, understanding keys and areas of responsibilities, as well as preparation and guidance for advancing to a higher level.
“We’re also striving to help those who wish to become football officials by inviting them to the event and assisting in their preparation and certification process,” Schoen said.
