Haason Reddick's future with the Eagles has been uncertain, but now he's leaving.
The Eagles are trading the 29-year-old edge rusher to the New York Jets for a conditional 2026 third-round pick, a source confirmed to The Philadelphia Inquirer. ESPN was the first to report the news on Friday.
If Reddick plays 67.5% of the defensive snaps and gets at least 10 sacks, the pick in 2026 becomes a second-round pick. Reddick has surpassed these goals in each of his last four seasons, but the Jets have many edge rushers and will use them in a rotation.
Reddick, a native of Camden and former Temple college player, is in the final year of his contract and wants a new deal. It is expected that he will sign a new contract with the Jets after the trade.
He joined the Eagles as a free agent on March 14, 2022, signing a three-year deal worth up to $45 million. Reddick has been very productive, with 27 sacks in the last two seasons, ranking seventh in the NFL. His average annual value currently ranks 17th among edge rushers, according to Over The Cap.
In February, the Eagles allowed Reddick to seek a trade. Reddick, who is almost 30, was seeking a new contract and was set to be the highest-paid player on the Eagles roster in 2024 with a $21.8 million cap hit.
Once the Eagles signed Bryce Huff and gave Josh Sweat $10 million in guaranteed money, a trade seemed likely.
Now that Reddick is gone, the Eagles will need to decide how to handle snaps in 2024. Sweat, 27, played alongside Reddick, but his performance declined as the season went on. Huff, who is 26, has not played more than 51% of the defensive snaps in a season.
Nolan Smith, the No. 30 pick in the 2023 draft, will have a larger role in his second year with the defense. Last season, he played just 16% of the defensive snaps.
Brandon Graham has been re-signed for his 15th season with the team. He is 36 and had three sacks on 34% of the snaps. They also added Zack Baun and Julian Okwara in free agency as edge rushers.
During his time in Philadelphia, Reddick earned two Pro Bowl nods and one second-team All-Pro selection (2022). He is one of two players, along with Myles Garrett, to have double-digit sacks in each of the last four seasons. He will also be remembered for his strip sack on Brock Purdy in the NFC championship game that helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl.
