Police in Ogun State have apprehended Aliu Oyetola, 35, and Seyi Afolabi, 40, who are reportedly part of a four-man group of ‘one chance’ robbers causing fear among people in Sango Ota and nearby areas.
The police captured Oyetola and Afolabi while patrolling around Itori, the center of Ewekoro Local Government area of the state, on March 28, 2024.
The officers had been tracking this gang since a victim reported being robbed on March 23, 2024, losing over N320,000 to the robbers.
The state police command's spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, revealed this in a press statement on Friday.
Odutola stated, “The victim got into a Toyota Corolla taxi at Ijako market, heading to Itori, with four men who deceptively posed as fellow passengers in the taxi.
“During the journey, the men robbed the victim by forcibly taking her smartphone valued at N85,000, the money of N123,000 from a POS machine, and an additional N105,000 in cash, and then pushed her out of the car and escaped.
“Following the report, the Sango Ota Division's DPO instructed the surveillance team to watch out for the perpetrators of the crime.”
She further explained that on March 28, 2024, while the police were monitoring Itori Road, a Toyota Corolla car used by the gang was coming towards the police but suddenly stopped and the occupants ran in different directions.
However, the police successfully chased and arrested the pair.
They also recovered a Toyota Corolla vehicle with plate number GGE 659 FR.
The two suspects who were arrested provided confessional statements and cooperated with the police, giving valuable information that could lead to the arrest of other escaping members of the gang.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu, has ordered the suspects to be transferred to the Anti-robbery Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution.
