MTN Group has named Mike Silber as its Group Executive Regulatory Officer, starting on April 1, 2024.
The phone company revealed this in a statement on its website on Friday.
Silber moves from Liquid Telecom to MTN Group, where he served as Group Chief Regulatory Officer for five years.
While at Liquid Telecom, Silber played a key role in building and expanding the most extensive cross-border fibre network in Africa, as well as the continent’s largest networked data centre operation, as per the telco.
“These accomplishments demonstrate his dedication to improving Africa’s digital landscape and his skill in navigating the complex legal, policy, and regulatory obstacles to drive business success and improve connectivity,” it said.
MTN Group's Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer, Lele Modise, expressed, “Mike’s extensive background, which includes legal expertise and regulatory leadership across Africa and beyond, makes him a valuable addition to our team.
“His commitment to closing digital gaps within Africa and globally aligns with MTN’s mission.
“We are excited about the innovative approaches and ideas Mike will bring to our efforts to enable a modern connected life for everyone on the continent.”
The company stated that with over 25 years of experience in the telecom and internet sectors, Silber will bring legal, policy, and regulatory expertise to tackle business challenges and find creative solutions to deliver business results.
Silber is a South African lawyer, with B.Proc. and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.
His experience involves serving on the boards of various industry organizations, such as ISPA South Africa and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and he is an associate of the LINK Centre at Wits.
The company mentioned that he also contributed his expertise to the boards of the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa and the Public Interest Registry.
MTN stated that it expects his substantial contributions to help achieve the group’s goal of leading digital solutions for Africa’s advancement.
