Drew Pomeranz, who has played in Southern California for the last four seasons, might continue to stay there after March 29.
Alex Freedman, a broadcaster for Oklahoma City's Triple-A, made the report. that the The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Pomeranz to a minor-league deal. He will start with the minor league team in Oklahoma City. Freedman mentioned that Pomeranz, a nine-year MLB veteran, has been dealing with injuries for the past two seasons. He was with the Angels during Spring Training and got released recently.
Freedman wrote this on X (formerly Twitter). This all happened after the Angels released Pomeranz on March 24.Pomeranz spent the prior four seasons with the
San Diego Padres . It was his second stint with the team. He spent Pomeranz has also played for the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red SoxSan Francisco Giants, and Milwaukee Brewers.
He has a record of 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA in 289 games, starting 140 games in his 13-year MLB career. During his first stint with the Padres, he was named to the All-Star team., The Dodgers have added Drew Pomeranz to increase their starting pitching depth. and Tyler Glasnow performed exceptionally well during his second appearance with the Dodgers in the team’s home opening game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He only allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 6 innings.However, the Dodgers currently have significant uncertainties in their starting rotation for the 2024 season.
In 2016, he made Traditional mainstays Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler started the regular season on the injured list. Emmet Sheehan, Dustin May, and Tony Gonsolin are also on the IL.
These five starters collectively pitched for more than 340 innings last season, even though Buehler didn't pitch at all because he was recovering from Tommy John surgery he had in August 2022.
Even though signing Pomeranz doesn’t immediately help the Dodgers, if he performs well in Triple-A, he could provide additional experienced pitching support this season. He allowed Pomeranz's latest MLB start was in 2019 with the Brewers. In the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Padres, he made a total of 47 relief appearances. During those two seasons, he had an impressive 1.62 ERA in 44.1 innings and was particularly effective against left-handed batters in 2021, allowing just a .156 batting average against.
When Pomeranz was an All-Star in 2016, he achieved an 11-12 record with a 3.32 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 170.2 innings. The Dodgers' plans for Pomeranz within their organization, whether as a starter or a relief pitcher, are not yet clear. Pomeranz has not played in the MLB since 2021 due to injuries.
In August 2021, the Padres ruled Pomeranz out for the rest of the season because of a torn flexor tendon. This injury caused him to miss the entirety of the 2022 season as well. Then, in May 2023, Pomeranz underwent an additional surgery on his left elbow flexor tendon, which was described by Padres manager Bob Melvin as a “cleanup” surgery. While rehabbing at Triple-A El Paso, Pomeranz faced a setback that ruled him out for the remainder of the 2023 season.
