The Atlantic has reached profitability and exceeded 1 million subscriptions, the company announced on Thursday.
The multi-platform publisher has experienced a 14% growth in subscriptions in the last year and double-digit percentage growth in each of the past four years. Additionally, revenue has risen by over 10% year over year, and there has been a 33% year over year increase in booked advertising.
Since launching its digital product and digital and print bundle four years ago, The Atlantic has more than doubled its total paid subscriptions.
“A few years ago, when we initially outlined these goals, we were far from reaching them. Therefore, today is a significant day in the history of our magazine,” Editor in Chief Jeffrey Goldberg and CEO Nicholas Thompson said in an email to staff. “However, the key to ongoing success is to be dissatisfied with the present in a constructive manner. Both of us strongly believe that our 1 million subscriptions are just the beginning of future excellence and growth. Profitability is precarious in the media industry, so we will continue to be highly disciplined in running our operations.”
The Atlantic has won Pulitzer Prizes in each of the past three years and is currently nominated for the fourth consecutive year for the top honor of General Excellence in the National Magazine Awards, which it won in both 2022 and 2023. Five of the magazine’s features and issues are also nominated for reporting awards.
The pair stressed that 2024 will be a “highly important year” in the history of the magazine.
“The high quality journalism and urgency we bring to our coverage will establish a standard for the industry and help lead our readers through challenging times,” they added. “We all share the same objective: to support and enhance our historical mission; to continuously innovate; and to attract new readers worldwide every day. Thank you all for your outstanding work, and congratulations.”
