The Labour Party has decided to keep its 2027 presidential ticket for its 2023 election candidate, Peter Obi.
A statement released after the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday, mentioned this.
The statement was signed by the party's National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim.
The convention recommended reserving the 2027 presidential ticket for Peter Gregory Obi, the party’s national leader, based on his past election performance.
Obi, who came third in the 2023 election, was also mentioned in the statement.
The party also proposed reserving the governorship ticket for Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor.
Originally planned for Umuahia, Abia State, the convention was moved to Nnewi, Anambra State.
This decision came after the Nigeria Labour Congress criticized the convention as illegal.
The NLC's political arm also demanded Abure’s resignation as party chairman.
However, on Wednesday, Abure was re-elected as the party’s chair.
The statement also mentioned that the convention believes that what you do with power is more important than seizing it.
The state of the nation post-2023 election was reviewed, highlighting the worsening security situation and economy.
The nation is experiencing drastic inflation, high unemployment, hunger, and poverty due to currency devaluation and rising fuel prices.
The convention urged President Bola Tinubu to take quick and proactive steps to prevent the total collapse of the economy.
