The Alberta government is requesting increased jurisdiction over provincial immigration from the federal government.
Premier Danielle Smith penned a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, urging him to reconsider the government's decision to limit the numbers for Alberta’s provincial nominee program in 2024.
She has been informed that Alberta will receive less than 10,000 allotments, while she believes it should be double that number due to Alberta's significant role in job creation and the national economy.
The program selects individuals for permanent residency in Alberta if they possess the skills to address job shortages or intend to establish a business.
Smith noted that 57,000 Ukrainians relocated to Alberta following the Russian invasion and expressed the province's desire to welcome more refugees.
The federal Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel expired last summer, but visa holders have until the end of the month to enter Canada.
