The Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, emphasized the importance of unity, stating that the beauty and strength of the country lie in its diversity.
Barau, on Tuesday, welcomed the Oluwo of Iwo, a respected traditional ruler in Osun State, to his office at the National Assembly in Abuja.
During their discussion, the two leaders expressed that Nigerians, regardless of their origins, should advocate for unity and collaborate for the progress of the country.
Barau highlighted the significant role of traditional rulers in promoting unity for the peaceful coexistence and development of the country.
He stated, “Traditional leaders have important roles in fostering national unity and development. Therefore, we urge them to consistently promote unity and peaceful coexistence among all citizens. Both within and beyond their jurisdictions, traditional rulers should continue to advocate for unity, peace, and tolerance.”
In his earlier comments, the traditional ruler emphasized that Nigeria's diversity is its beauty.
Oluwo remarked, “Diversity is the beauty of Nigeria. This is why we have a population of over 200 million. No single ethnic group such as Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa can boast of this number. Our unity is our source of pride, and we will coexist harmoniously forever.
“That is why I married my wife from Kano, in the Northern part of the country, to promote national unity. We still need that unity and we will remain united forever.”
Praising the Deputy Senate President for his various interventions and empowerment programs, he expressed his admiration for Barau's leadership style.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the pride of Lagos and the South, I pray Almighty God to make you the pride of Kano and the entire North,” he said.
