At least three people may have died, and many others were hurt when a truck hit pedestrians on the Asaba, Delta State end of the River Niger bridge on Saturday.
Reports suggest that the truck's brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and hit pedestrians and bystanders while trying to stop the vehicle.
Witnesses said the accident happened late on Saturday and resulted in the immediate death of a woman and her children, with others sustaining various injuries.
An eyewitness told our reporter on Sunday, “It was a terrible accident yesterday evening (Saturday) at the Onitsha head bridge. A truck traveling towards the Asaba end of the bridge had brake failure and hit the walkway.
“The truck hit bystanders and people waiting to board Asaba-bound vehicles. Among the victims were a mother and her children, as well as several other pedestrians.
“About three people died immediately, while several others were injured, some critically.
“Security officers quickly responded to the incident to restore order and help with emergency operations.”
When contacted on Sunday, the acting Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, could not confirm the incident and asked to contact FRSC officials at the head bridge before responding.
As of the time of writing this report, she has not responded.
