Several people have been reportedly killed in a clash between rival youths in the Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Many individuals were also hurt during the clash, which started on Saturday night between Taroh and Motola youths in the area and continued until early Sunday.
The state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, confirmed the situation to The PUNCH in Jos on Sunday.
The commissioner, who attributed the situation to disputed land in the area, stated, “I have just called the Mikang Local Government chairman over the issue. He informed me that it is something that could have been prevented and not allowed to escalate to the point that people lost their lives, and currently, there are individuals receiving treatment at the hospital.
“It began due to a dispute over land.
“According to the LG chairman, the land in question cannot even produce six bags of rice, and you know when people are attached to their land, they could go the extra mile.
“It is something they could have controlled their emotions, but somehow, it got to a point where others too joined them and houses were set on fire and people were injured.”
He encouraged people to always explore alternative ways to resolve their differences and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, said security personnel had been sent to the troubled area while investigation into the incident continues.
“The area is now peaceful. People are going about their normal businesses,” the PPRO added
