The Lekki Conservation Centre will be opened again on March 29, 2024, after maintenance work, as per the Lagos State Government.
A statement on the state government's official website on Sunday revealed this information.
Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, confirmed this during a visit to the centre with ministry officials.
In a part of the statement, it was mentioned, “The Lagos State Government and the management of the centre have announced that the Walkway will be reopened for public use with effect from Friday, March 29, 2024, following the completion of extensive routine maintenance works at the Lekki Conservation Centre.
Aregbe expressed satisfaction at the completion of repairs and renovations, including the walkway, and its availability for tourism during the Easter celebration.
“The Special Adviser expressed gratitude to Lagosians and tourists worldwide for their patience during the comprehensive maintenance performed at the Centre in Lekki.”
Prof Mathew Onoja, the Director-General of the Centre, also expressed appreciation in the statement for the state government's intervention and swift response to the maintenance needs highlighted in the viral video from December.
PUNCH reported The state government directed the closure of the tourist destination in January for repairs after a visitor's viral video showed the poor state of the canopy walk bridge and other areas.
The government clarified that the damage highlighted in the viral video had already been fixed before its circulation, but the centre was closed for additional routine maintenance.
The Lekki Conservation Centre, situated in Lagos, is a nature reserve and one of Nigeria's most popular tourist attractions, featuring the longest canopy walkway in Africa.
