The Niger Delta Development Commission has stated that it will use modern technology to address the erosion problem in the Sangana community in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
This is in response to the recent damaging ocean surge in the community.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, mentioned during an inspection of the eroded shoreline that the commission's intervention is a result of President Bola Tinubu's urgent directive to alleviate the suffering of the people.
This information was provided in a statement released in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Sunday by the commission’s Director, Corporate Affairs, Pius Ughakpoteni.
Ogbuku referred to the President as a compassionate leader who is concerned about the people, thus his call to take action in the aftermath of what was considered a serious ecological disaster in the Niger Delta region.
Ogbuku, accompanied by the NDDC Executive Director, Projects, Victor Antai, visited the community to assess the extent of the damage and donated relief supplies for the immediate needs of the people who were displaced by the ocean surge.
He remarked that the President was pleased with the community due to its economic significance and the enduring peace over the years, which facilitated the conducive environment for oil exploration and exploitation activities.
He stated, “Before your letter of appeal reached our head office in Port Harcourt, the ocean surge in Sagana had already been publicized in the media. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria saw it and directed us to come and witness the situation in Sagana and provide feedback.”
The NDDC boss expressed his delight at the presidential directive, indicating a responsible leader who cares about the people, regardless of their location.
“My presence in your community, apart from being a son of the soil, is in response to Mr. President’s directive and having witnessed the devastation in your community. We will immediately proceed to see how we can improve the situation.”.
Ogbuku encouraged the community to continue fostering peace and attracting development, as it can only occur in a peaceful setting.
He added, “We had previously awarded the contract for shore protection in your community, but we will reassess it. In NDDC, we are also exploring new technology such as the Geotube system, which is used for rebuilding and reclaiming the land naturally.”
The NDDC Managing Director also urged the multinational oil companies operating in the area to collaborate in addressing the ongoing ocean surge in the communities around the area, as NDDC cannot handle it alone.
“After evaluating the situation on the ground, we will compile the necessary documents and explore opportunities for collaboration with the state government and the International Oil Companies (IOCs) to collectively ensure the protection of our communities,” he mentioned.
The leader of the Sangana Council of Traditional Rulers, Moses Kenibara VII, also known as Amadabo of Moko-Ama Sangana, expressed gratitude to the president for the affection shown to the people of the community.
