A human rights organization called International Observers in the Pursuant of Justice is asking the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Adedayo Shotobi, to be fair in the ongoing investigation into the death of the late singer, Oladimeji Aloba, also known as Mohbad.
In a statement on Sunday, the group's chairperson, Victoria Janolewsky, expressed worries about how the case of Mohbad is being handled.
It also requested fairness, equity, and justice in the situation.
The group informed the coroner, “If for any reason, you are no longer able to oversee this case due to personal reasons or biases, please respectfully recuse yourself.
“We, the international observers, urge the magistrate to ensure fairness and justice prevail in this matter, acknowledging that staying silent in the face of injustice is wrong as everyone is equal before the law and subject to the rule of law.
“If Mohbad's case is properly handled, it will mark a significant moment for the judiciary and a strong warning for society, setting a new standard for the community, highlighting the sanctity and dignity of human life.”
The group additionally stated, “Nigeria is a country of high standards of law and order, which should not be compromised by any individuals or personalities.
“We observed that when a witness named Spending was about to describe the incident on the 3rd Mainland Bridge between the deceased and Wunmi Cynthia Adebanjo, the deceased's live-in partner, you interrupted and asked him to calm down.
“This single action made him lose his train of thought and further intimidated and suppressed his already low self-esteem and confidence, leading to increased anxiety, as seen in the subsequent panic attack. These are key signs and symptoms of a panic attack in this situation.”
In the spirit of justice, the group emphasized that every witness should be called and allowed to freely share their version of the truth without fear or intimidation.
It also suggested that such witnesses should be safeguarded and provided with high security to ensure their safety under the Witness Protection Act.
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 in Lagos State.
