Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a former member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council in Osun State, is calling on President Bola Tinubu to step in and address the rising cost of cooking gas in the country.
Oyintiloye believes that Nigerians are experiencing tough economic times and struggle to afford food while also facing challenges with using gas for cooking.
He made these comments in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Sunday when speaking with the press, stating that the cost of cooking gas has become too high for the people.
The party leader expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder now costs between N17,500 and N18,000 in many parts of the country.
He mentioned that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, had announced on February 22 that the government had instructed producers of Liquefied Petroleum Gas to stop exporting the product, but this decision has not resulted in a reduction of the item's price domestically.
Oyintiloye believes that President Buhari will take immediate action on this issue due to his receptiveness to feedback.
He acknowledged the government's ban on the exportation of the product, but pointed out that it has not yet had a positive impact on the public.
He also mentioned the challenges resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies and the unstable electricity supply, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions.
He stressed the importance of all relevant stakeholders working together with the President to address the issues in the oil and gas industry without delay.
He noted that the increased prices of the product may be due to LPG producers secretly exporting the products.
He also emphasized the need to lower the price of cooking gas, highlighting the detrimental impact of using solid fuels like charcoal and firewood on the environment.
He added that using these fuels could worsen climate change challenges and have adverse effects such as deforestation, desertification, and soil degradation, leading to erosion.
He explained that this could lead to serious health issues such as respiratory problems, fatigue, headaches, confusion, and dizziness due to inadequate oxygen delivery to the brain, ultimately affecting people's overall well-being.
He stressed the importance of green plants in providing oxygen and the negative impact of cutting down green trees to substitute clean cooking gas with firewood and charcoal.
He praised the President for stabilizing the naira against the dollar and encouraged Nigerians to support Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
He commended the President for his continuous efforts to improve the country's economy and called for patience, endurance, prayers, and support for the President to overcome the current challenges.
