The National Association of University Students disapproved of the news about unauthorized mining happening at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.
This information was in a document signed by the Vice Chairman of NAUS in Osun State, Akinyemi Hammed, Deputy National President, Babalola Daniel and National Security Director of NAUS, Eruobami Ayobami on Saturday.
This comes shortly after the university's management denied the report, stating that they have not engaged in any form of agreement with unauthorized miners.
However, the student union expressed sympathy for the university community members who are directly impacted by these illegal activities.
The statement mentioned, “The safety, health, and well-being of thousands of students, faculty, and staff members are seriously threatened by the recent revelations regarding illegal mining activities near the university’s staff quarters and essential water sources.
“The sanctity of academia is violated when mining operations encroach on university property, endangering the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment that academic institutions are meant to promote.”
NAUS urged relevant stakeholders to quickly address the situation at the institution, stating that investigative measures are necessary.
“All relevant parties must focus on the OAU crisis and take immediate action. We insist that the administration of the institution prioritize the security and welfare of the student body by swiftly putting an end to these illegal acts and holding those involved accountable.
“Additionally, we urge the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Solid Minerals, and other related organizations to conduct a thorough investigation into the issue and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
“Furthermore, we call upon international organizations to contribute their knowledge and support in resolving this urgent issue, which poses a threat not only to the neighborhood but also to the environment and public health.
“It is crucial to work together to ensure that our universities remain bastions of knowledge and progress, free from the impact of illegal mining and other harmful activities.
“NAUS is unwavering in its dedication to advocating for the welfare and rights of Nigerian students, and it will closely monitor events at OAU,” the statement continued.
