Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, called the assault on a concert hall that resulted in over 100 deaths a “barbaric terrorist act”.
Putin also pledged tough retaliation against everyone responsible.
During a public speech, Putin announced that all four attackers were apprehended before they could escape to Ukraine.
“I am addressing you today regarding the brutal, barbaric terrorist act that claimed the lives of numerous innocent, peaceful individuals,” Putin stated in his first public comments following the attack.
“All four individuals who committed the terrorist attack by shooting and killing people have been captured. They were heading towards Ukraine where, according to initial information, they intended to cross the border,” stated the leader of the Kremlin.
According to Russia’s FSB security service, the attackers were previously “in contact” with individuals in Ukraine as they attempted to flee the country.
At least 115 individuals were fatally shot by armed attackers at the Crocus City Hall in a suburb on the northern outskirts of Moscow on Friday. The concert hall was set on fire. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Russian authorities have not confirmed this.
“Terrorists, murderers, inhumane individuals will suffer severe consequences and oblivion,” stated Putin, who declared Sunday as a day of national mourning throughout Russia.
