WYOMING — We visited the historic Victory Pig Pizza & Barbeque as part of the Luzerne County Pizza Trail. It's located at 905 Wyoming Ave.
Established in 1942, this famous restaurant specializes in a unique fried Sicilian-style pizza that has been a local favorite for many years. Although their dining room has been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their takeout service has continued to thrive, offering a nostalgic car service experience. Customers simply park their cars facing the building, flash their lights, and honk their horn to signal for service. While you can try to call, most people recommend just showing up.
In addition to pizza, Victory Pig offers items like pork barbecue, burgers, hot dogs, wimpies, ham and cheese, French fries, wings, and more.
The business opens from 4:30 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We made sure to arrive early on a Friday during Lent and were fortunate to grab the last parking spot before their lights came on at 4:30 p.m. Our order was taken shortly after, and after a 40-minute wait, our pizza was ready. We passed the time with games on our cell phones.
Our family ordered a mix of onion and no-onion slices, and the total came to $33.52 for 12 slices, which is about $2.75 per slice. This is a reasonable price for the unique experience and taste offered by Victory Pig. It's important to note that they only accept cash, but there's an ATM available on-site for convenience.
Upon arriving home, which was only about a mile away, we eagerly enjoyed the pizza. The crust was pleasantly crispy with less grease than other fried Sicilian pizzas we've had before. While the cheese and sauce combination wasn’t to my liking — I thought it had too much cheese and lacked seasoning — my daughter absolutely loved it. This just shows that taste is subjective, and what one person doesn't like, another may love.
Ultimately, Victory Pig Pizza offers a unique and memorable takeout experience, rich in tradition and local charm. It's a testament to the varied culinary scene of our pizza trail.
