The Ogun State Government announced on Friday that it is already in the process of fixing the Agbado-Oke Aro-Akute Road.
The government was responding to a video showing roughly 500 pastors urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to repair the road as he promised during his re-election campaign.
In a statement released by the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, on Friday, the state government confirmed that it has not neglected its responsibilities for road construction, having built over 600km of roads since taking office in 2019.
It also stated that half of the Alagbole-Sango Ota Road has been completed, with the remaining portion included in this year's budget.
However, it noted that the slight delay in carrying out the project was due to budgetary issues and the increase in construction material costs, and assured that these challenges are being addressed.
The government also urged residents of the area to fulfill their tax obligations to the state and assist the government in providing public services.
Akinsanya remarked: “We are aligned with the clerics in the video who are calling for action on the road, as we are committed to completing the project to alleviate the difficulties faced by our people.
“The government has a constitutional obligation to ensure good roads for the people of Ogun State, and it has heavily invested in roads under Prince Dapo Abiodun's leadership.
“This particular road, Alagbole to Sango Ota, spans about 32 km, and the government has already completed 16 km of it. Additionally, it is included in the 2024 budget.
“However, the budget provision is insufficient given the current reality, especially with regard to foreign exchange. The cost of asphalt, granite, and other materials has increased, and the government is seeking ways to bridge the cost gap. As we all know, a project initially estimated at N1bn may now cost more than double. Thus, it requires significant reengineering.
“Instead of engaging in subtle coercion and damaging someone's reputation, we need to work together to revive the economy.
“The public must also assist the government in overcoming the economic challenges by paying their taxes.
“Data shows that most residents in the area are not included in the tax system. They should contribute to the government by paying their taxes on time to provide better support.
