With their early offseason moves, the Detroit Lions have positioned themselves to challenge for the Super Bowl in 2024. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t add another top player. Detroit Lions have put themselves in position to make a run at the Super Bowl during the 2024 season. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t still add another star player. Pro Football Network’s Nick Faria suggested that star could be Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Faria listed the Lions as one of five potential landing spots for Diggs.
“A contending team that needs a wide receiver to pair with a reliable quarterback and emerging outside receiver? The Detroit Lions could be interested in bringing in a talent like Diggs,” wrote Faria.
“Jared Goff had an impressive season and led Detroit to the conference championship for the first time in decades. The Lions should do everything possible to make the most of their championship opportunity — even if it means adjusting their cap space and draft picks.”
Diggs had 107 catches for 1,183 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns during the 2023 season. It was his fourth straight season with over 100 catches and 1,100 yards.
Adding that kind of production to the Lions' offense, which ranked second in the NFL in passing yards in 2023, is a daunting prospect for the rest of the league.
Could the Buffalo Bills Trade Stefon Diggs?
Diggs has seemingly shown dissatisfaction in Buffalo when the team has fallen short of expectations.
Recently, Diggs caused a stir with a mysterious tweet that some thought might indicate a possible departure from Buffalo.
“Ready for whatever,” wrote Diggs on X (formerly Twitter).
However, ESPN’s Dan Graziano doesn’t view the tweet as a sign that Diggs’ time in Buffalo is ending.
“After checking with people close to the situation, most of the feedback I received was, ‘This is Stefon Diggs, he does this a lot and ultimately they’ve been able to resolve it every time with Buffalo,’” Graziano said, via Bleacher Report. “As of now, I expect him to stay with the Bills this year.”
According to Spotrac, Diggs is under contract until the 2027 season and will have about a $27.85 million cap hit in 2024. The Bills would incur a significant dead cap hit if they traded Diggs this offseason.
How Diggs Would Fit With the Lions
At this point, it’s unlikely Diggs will be traded. But if he did become available before the draft, the Lions would be an interesting potential landing spot.
Detroit has a potent passing game even without Diggs, but veteran wide receiver Josh Reynolds is an unrestricted free agent. He was second in the team’s wide receiver group with 40 catches, 608 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns last season. Acquiring Diggs would more than make up for Reynolds. It could potentially give the Lions the best 1-2 wide receiver combo in the NFL.
Last season, Lions top receiver
Amon-Ra St. Brown achieved career-highs of 119 catches, 1,515 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. As he accumulated those statistics, he essentially split his playing time between the slot and the outside receiver positions. As primarily an outside receiving threat, Diggs could be an excellent complement to St. Brown.
Not to forget, both of them could catch the ball 100 times and get over 1,000 receiving yards.
The Lions have higher hopes for the nearly 23-year-old
Jameson Williams in 2024. But if they signed Diggs, Williams could continue in his comfortable WR3 role. Williams started performing really well in that position towards the end of last season. Apart from the Lions,
Faria also mentioned Dallas Cowboys the Washington Commanders, New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and as possible landing spots for Diggs. Nick Faria of Pro Football Network suggested that Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions could be a potential landing place for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
