Canada’s primary stock index rose by 100 points during late-morning trading, driven by the strength in technology and financial stocks, and U.S. stock markets also moved higher.
The S&P/TSX composite index increased by 100.84 points to reach 22,146.55.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average increased by 306.46 points to 39,818.59. The S&P 500 index rose by 30.20 points to 5,254.82, while the Nasdaq composite went up by 97.44 points to 16,466.85.
The value of the Canadian dollar in comparison with the US dollar was 73.93 cents, up from 73.75 cents on Wednesday.
The price of the May crude oil contract dropped by 91 cents to US$80.36 per barrel, and the May natural gas contract dropped by four cents to US$1.81 per mmBTU.
The April gold contract increased by US$17.40 to reach US$2,178.40 per ounce, and the May copper contract decreased by a penny to US$4.05 per pound.
