A soldier named Suleiman Sidiq has been taken into custody for attacking a police officer in Kwara State.
This information was shared by the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, in a statement on Thursday.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated that despite being brought to the police station on Thursday to address a complaint, the man stabbed Divisional Police Officer Marufu Keji while apparently under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
“On March 20, 2024, at about 1720 hours, a report was received from one PTE, Suleiman Sidiq, a soldier serving at Sector 3 Garrison, Mongunu, Maiduguri, concerning an incident of mischief in the Sinawu Town area of Ilesha-Baruba in Kwara State.
“During the investigation, it was found that the issue arose from a land dispute. The involved parties were cautioned to maintain peace and return the following day, March 21, 2024, for further resolution.
“However, the situation turned violent when the complainant, Suleiman Sidiq, who was under the influence of intoxicating substances, became unruly. Despite efforts and persuasion to calm him down proving unsuccessful, he assaulted the Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Okeowo Joel, during the intervention by the Divisional Police Officer, DSP Marufu Keji; Suleiman Sidiq produced a jackknife and caused severe injury to the head and stabbed the left hand of the DPO,” she said.
She pointed out that Sidiq managed to escape from the station by climbing over the fence.
She mentioned that police officers later apprehended him, and he was brought into custody, also indicating that the injured policeman is presently receiving medical care.
