The trial of a man charged with killing a Toronto police officer almost three years ago is set to receive testimony from the officer’s partner today.
Det. Const. Lisa Forbes is scheduled to testify at Umar Zameer's trial.
Zameer has declared that he did not commit first-degree murder in the killing of Const. Jeffrey Northrup.
Northrup, aged 55, passed away on July 2, 2021, after being hit by a car in an underground parking garage underneath Toronto City Hall.
The court was informed that Northrup and Forbes were in plain clothes when they arrived at the garage to look into a stabbing. Zameer was not connected to the stabbing.
During their initial statements to the jury on Wednesday, the prosecution and defense presented significantly different accounts of the events that led to Northrup’s death.
The defense claimed that the officer’s death was a “tragic accident” brought about by a misunderstanding and fear, while the Crown attributed it to a series of decisions made by Zameer in a short period of time.
Jurors observed security footage from the area around city hall and the garage on Wednesday, but were informed that the video from the parking area is limited.
