Three suspected cult members and one person who stole a motorcycle have been captured in the Osogbo city area by officers of the Police Command in Osun State and local hunters.
A person living in the Alekuwodo Area of Osogbo, who only gave the name Adebayo, explained to The PUNCH on Thursday that the suspected cult members had been causing fear among the residents of the area for some time until they were caught by the police, who acted based on a tip.
He explained that the suspects had gathered in the area for a meeting when the Osun Anti Cultism Squad appeared and held three of the suspected cult members, while the rest ran away.
The Public Relations Officer of the Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest during an interview and said that those caught had attacked some people around 12:30 pm in the Alekuwodo Area, and were apprehended by officers who responded to a distress call.
Opalola also mentioned, “We were informed by members of the public that the criminals, believed to be part of an illegal group, were causing fear in the Alekuwodo Area, Osogbo.
As soon as we received the information, detectives from the Anti cultism unit took action and captured 3 suspects, while the rest ran away. The three of them admitted to being part of Aye Confraternity.”
Similarly, someone named Sodiq, who is said to be a member of a well-known gang of thieves that specializes in stealing motorcycles, was also arrested in the Ilesa Garage Area of Osogbo.
It was reported that officers from the Anti Cultism Unit and members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service who were patrolling the area apprehended the suspect.
Following his arrest, some people who saw what happened in the area stated that three motorcycles were recovered from Sodiq by the police.
The police spokesperson, who also confirmed the arrest, mentioned that efforts will be made to capture the other members of the gang who fled.
