Ontario is allocating an additional $1.6 billion to municipalities for constructing essential infrastructure to support the construction of new homes.
Today, Premier Doug Ford announced before the budget that he has been informed by municipal leaders that a shortage of funds for building roads and water lines is one of the main obstacles to constructing more homes.
Ford aims to build 1.5 million homes by 2031, but the province is currently not on track to achieve that target.
The government claims it achieved 99 percent of its goal for last year, but this is only because it has now started including long-term care beds in the total count.
The new funding announced today consists of a $1 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program and an extra $625 million for a specific fund for water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure.
The government has also established a $1.2 billion Building Faster Fund for housing-enabling and community infrastructure over three years.
