CBS announced Thursday that Kyle Schmid has joined the cast of “NCIS: Origins.”
Schmid will portray the young special agent Mike Franks in the “NCIS” prequel series, and will act alongside “Whiplash” star Austin Stowell, who will play young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and “The Watchful Eye” star Mariel Molina, who will take on the role of special agent Lala Dominguez.
Mike Franks, originally introduced in the flagship “NCIS” series, is described as a “proud Texan who practically bathes in his cowboy boots and sports a perfectly styled mustache that’s as thick as his skin” and a “natural leader with a strong moral compass who’s committed to seeking justice by any means necessary,” according to the official character description.
Schmid is best recognized for his roles in the History Channel’s “Six,” BBC America’s “Copper,” Syfy’s “Being Human” and Netflix’s “The I-Land.” He also had a recurring role in ABC’s “Big Sky.”
CBS ordered “NCIS: Origins” to series in early January, and it is scheduled for the 2024-25 broadcast season.
The new series will be set in 1991, prior to the events of “NCIS,” and will follow young Gibbs as he “begins his career as a newly appointed special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he finds his place on a tough, makeshift team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks,” according to the official logline.
Mark Harmon, who portrays Gibbs in the flagship series, and his son, Sean Harmon, who has also played Gibbs, will be executive producers of the series alongside “NCIS” writers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal. Harmon will also provide the narration for the series.
North, who is currently a co-showrunner and EP on “NCIS,” and Monreal will be co-showrunners for “NCIS: Origins,” which is produced by CBS Studios.
“NCIS: Origins” is just one way that the “NCIS” franchise is expanding, with Paramount+ ordering a new spin-off series centered on franchise favorites Ziva David and Tony DiNozzo, and “NCIS: Sydney” receiving a Season 2 order from CBS and Paramount+ Australia.
Schmid is represented by Mainstay Entertainment.
