Four children have died from a new outbreak of the diphtheria illness in villages in Mingibir Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Information Officer of the local government, Tasiu Yahaya Dadin-Duniya, and shared with a local radio station in Kano, Arewa Radio, at least 28 others have been admitted to hospitals.
The statement mentioned, “Four children have died of diphtheria and 28 children have fallen ill with the disease in Kwarkiya, Kuru, Kunya and Minjibir Villages in Minjibir Local Government Area of the state.
“Muhammad Yakubu Kunya, the Interim Management Officer of the local government, has appealed to the authorities and stakeholders to promptly assist Minjibir local government in safeguarding the health of the communities”.
The district head of the local government, as mentioned in the statement, has also urged traditional leaders and Islamic teachers in the communities to educate the public and pray for relief.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the State Ministry of Health, mentioned that the report had been sent to the State Director of Public Health but had not yet been confirmed or refuted.
