The police chief, Olukayode Egbetokun, met with US Treasury Department and Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit delegates at Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Wednesday.
The discussion focused on improving financial intelligence and bolstering the fight against corruption, counterterrorism financing, and money laundering.
The IG urged the Force Intelligence Department and Nigerian intelligence community to intensify their operations against terrorists and kidnappers.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Adejobi stated, “Due to ongoing kidnapping threats in some areas, the Nigeria Police Force is ramping up efforts to combat the crime and related vices.
In line with this, the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department and the broader intelligence community to strengthen their operations and intelligence gathering capabilities to effectively address the issue of kidnapping across the nation.
“The IG observed that kidnapping and other security threats remained significant challenges in some regions, endangering the safety and well-being of citizens.
“Acknowledging the seriousness of this trend, the NPF is dedicated to deploying all necessary resources and strategies to reduce the challenges and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
“As a result, the IG has instructed the Force Intelligence Department to intensify its intelligence-gathering efforts and work closely with other law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders to collect actionable intelligence on kidnapping syndicates and their evolving natures across the country.
“Furthermore, the intelligence community is encouraged to improve coordination and information sharing to facilitate targeted operations against kidnappers and their networks to rescue captives at various locations and disrupt the activities of the perpetrators who are determined to disrupt the collective peace and stability in the country.
