The talk between the Federal Government and the leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions ended without success on Wednesday as both sides couldn't agree.
The head of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, told our reporter that the unions will keep striking.
“The strike will go on,” Ibrahim said in response to the meeting.
SSANU and NASU commenced started a seven-day nationwide strike on Monday to express their displeasure at the Federal Government's decision to withhold their four-month salaries from 2021 due to their previous strike.
The government under President Muhammadu Buhari held back the salaries, citing the 'No work; no pay' policy.
However, the current administration under President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of the withheld salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, who were also affected by the previous administration’s ‘no work; no pay’ policy.
However, SSANU and NASU were unhappy about being excluded.
They wrote to the Tinubu government, requesting the release of their withheld salaries.
The government, however, ignored the repeated requests, leading to the two unions starting a strike.
According to The PUNCH, the seven-day warning strike, which began on Monday, brought academic activities on university campuses across the country to a standstill.
