Luzerne County got $2.5 million in federal funding for improving Main Road in Hunlock and Ross townships, according to U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Dallas, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
Main Road has been identified as a top priority for repairs in the county based on evaluations using road data and specialized software to determine its condition, as stated by county officials.
The county had requested the federal funding, which was included in the 2024 appropriations legislation as a federal Community Funding Project, thanks to the efforts of Meuser, according to his announcement.
Meuser mentioned that the planned upgrades will address essential infrastructure needs and will span about 7.74 miles of roadway.
Meuser's release noted that the current poor condition of Main Road is a concern for mobility and safety, especially for rural residents and emergency personnel who rely on it for access and egress to the community. Once the project is completed, Main Road will offer safe transportation for residents and community services.
This allocation will free up $1.8 million in county federal American Rescue Plan funding that was originally designated for addressing Main Road, as stated by county Manager Romilda Crocamo.
In July last year, the County council voted to allocate the American Rescue funds to the project due to the poor condition of Main Road.
To provide further context, the American Rescue funding became available for reprogramming because the original earmarked project — Sweet Valley Road in Ross Township — received a federal Highway Infrastructure Program Appropriation Act allocation secured with assistance from Meuser, according to past published reports.
Crocamo mentioned that she will be presenting options to county council on how to use the $1.8 million in American Rescue funding that is now available.
Meuser expressed his satisfaction in collaborating with Crocamo on the project.
“In Congress, I continue to support critical projects that benefit rural communities and improve our roads.”
Crocamo expressed gratitude to Meuser for his consistent support and dedication in securing funds for road improvements in Luzerne County.
Crocamo stated that Congressman Meuser's commitment to enhancing safety, connectivity, and efficiency for all residents and businesses in Luzerne County has been evident and greatly appreciated. She also noted his tireless advocacy on behalf of the county.
