Police in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested Gabriel Elihu, a former soldier wearing military clothing, for trying to kidnap someone in the FCT.
Elihu was taken into custody on March 17, after he tried to abduct two people traveling from H-Medix to Gishiri village in the Gwarimpa area of Abuja.
The suspect, who lives in Apo Mechanic Village in the FCT, and his accomplices used an unregistered Toyota Hilux to follow the victims.
They robbed the victims of their valuable items and attempted to take them to an undisclosed location when the victims raised the alarm.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the police intercepted the suspects and apprehended them.
During a display at the FCT Police Command in Abuja, Commissioner Benneth Igweh reported that the operatives found a black Toyota Hilux with the plate number NBB 03 AH (Nasarawa).
They also found a jackknife and some military gear.
When questioned by the journalists, Elihu admitted that his friend, a current military member, introduced him to extorting money from unsuspecting people while wearing military attire.
He stated, "My friend introduced me to this on March 17. I had even forgotten about this uniform because if you check, you will see that this is not the recent one. This is the one they gave everyone during the election eight years back."
"So, my friend said that when he was in Port Harcourt and he didn’t have money, they knew how to block Yahoo boys and check their phone profile to get them to settle them.
“He told us that if they settle (speaking about the March 17 incident), he will give us something to ‘hold body’, that is how the thing happened."
The dismissed soldier revealed that it was his first time taking part in such an activity and expressed remorse for his decision.
