The Minnesota Vikings seems to want to trade up in the next NFL draft to get a quarterback, but there are teams that might stop them.
Two of these teams are the New York Giants, who pick at No. 6, and the Washington Commanders, who have the second overall pick. It's not known which player(s) the Vikings want, but because of their draft position (No. 11 overall) and the teams they could trade with, it's likely that former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the one they want.
The Giants recently met with McCarthy, and the Commanders plan to do the same later this week, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.
. Schultz wrote on Tuesday, March 19, “Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy visited the #Giants last week, which included dinner with the front office and a tour of the facility,” “The #Commanders are flying out to Ann Arbor to have dinner Thursday night with McCarthy the night before his Pro Day, per multiple sources. The Commanders’ Interest in J.J. McCarthy Opens Up Interesting Possibilities for Vikings
2024 NFL draft quarterback prospects J.J. McCarthy (left) and Drake Maye (right).
GettyThe Commanders’ visit with McCarthy is not as worrying as the Giants’ interest for a few reasons.
Washington is almost certain to pick a quarterback at No. 2, given the team’s decisions to trade 2023 starter
Seattle Seahawks Sam Howell to the Jacoby Brissett, let away for what looks like a temporary starting position with the New England Patriots in 2024 and to sign Marcus Mariota as a likely backup to a rookie QB next season. So, if the Commanders pick McCarthy second, it would just push
Jayden Daniels out of the top three, making one of those players available to Minnesota if they trade up into the top five for a quarterback. or Drake Maye It’s possible that either Daniels, Maye or both are higher on the Vikings’ draft board than McCarthy, so losing out on McCarthy for one of those players could be a good move for Minnesota, if not something better.
Vikings Could End Up NFL Draft Losers if Giants Trade Up With Cardinals, Draft QB
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, formerly of the Michigan Wolverines.
GettyNew York is a different story.
The Giants pick sixth, while the Vikings pick 11th. Minnesota made a deal to get the
Houston Texans ‘ 23rd pick in this year’s draft, and most analysts think the Vikings will combine those two picks (Nos. 11 and 23) — and maybe a future first-rounder — to trade up. TheLos Angeles Chargers are the most likely trade partner at pick No. 5, while the Arizona Cardinals are also a possibility at fourth overall. The Cardinals really need a wide receiver and might pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. fourth, who is expected to be a very talented player. The Cardinals might not want to move down seven spots with the Vikings, but they could be willing to trade back two spots with the Giants for a lot of future draft value. If the Giants trade to the No. 4 spot, it will prevent McCarthy from being an option for the Vikings, and the top four QB prospects will be chosen before Minnesota's turn at No. 5.
This situation could weaken the Vikings’ recent trade with the Texans for another first-round pick in this year’s draft. Minnesota may have to decide whether to trade a lot to move up for a player, or skip selecting a first-round QB altogether.
The Vikings seem interested in trading up for a QB in the upcoming NFL draft, but there are other teams that could disturb their plans. Bo Nix, who probably isn’t worth that play from a value standpoint, or passing on a first-round QB altogether.
