New Brunswick's Progressive Conservative government is preparing to present its last budget before the upcoming provincial election.
Liberal Leader Susan Holt expresses the hope that today's budget will prioritize health care and the increasing cost of living, and will allocate funds for a fully funded school food program.
Green Leader David Coon also advocates for a universal lunch program in schools and increased funding for health care.
Finance Minister Ernie Steeves projected in February that the province would end the fiscal year with a surplus of $247.4 million, up from $40.3 million forecasted in last year's budget, with total projected revenues of $12.7 billion.
During the last budget session, the government acknowledged the challenges of providing housing, health care, and education for newcomers despite a wave of population growth in New Brunswick.
The upcoming provincial election is required to take place on or before Oct. 21.
