The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday refused the request for bail made by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, however, approved a speedy trial instead.
During the last adjourned date, the counsel for the IPOB leader, Alloy Ejimakor, asked the court to grant Kanu bail before the trial started.
Ejimakor mentioned that Kanu’s health was getting worse and his continued detention by the DSS was a danger to his life.
Ejimakor also argued that keeping Kanu in prison would prevent him from presenting a strong defense in the case.
But the counsel for the FG, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), requested the court to reject the bail application and instead proceed quickly with the trial.
He pointed out that the DSS has a medical facility to take care of Kanu.
Awomolo also accused Kanu of previously breaking bail conditions and failing to promise under oath in the affidavit filed by his lawyer that he wouldn’t do so again if granted bail.
Kanu was previously granted bail on health grounds on April 25, 2017, after spending 18 months in detention but he left the country after his residence was invaded by the military in September 2017.
