Quebec Liberal MP Anthony Housefather said he is considering his future in the Liberal party after an amended NDP motion on Palestinian statehood passed in the House of Commons on Monday.
Housefather, along with two other Liberals, voted against the final motion, which only sought progress towards a two-state solution instead of recognizing a Palestinian state.
The other two, former public-safety minister Marco Mendicino and Manitoba MP Ben Carr, both express disappointment in the last-minute amendment process.
Neither of them is thinking about changing their political affiliation.
But Housefather says that when his fellow Liberals applauded the NDP over the motion, for the first time in his life he isn’t sure if he wants to remain in the caucus.
Housefather believes that while the final version was an improvement, Liberals should have simply voted against the original motion, which, he says, did not acknowledge the existential threat to Israel and Jews worldwide.
