Staff members belonging to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University and Non Academic Staff Union at the University of Ilorin started a strike on Monday, following the instruction from the national leadership of the two unions.
SSANU and NASU members started a nationwide strike lasting seven days to object to what they consider as unjust treatment and discrepancies in the payment of salaries withheld by the Federal Government.
According to PUNCH correspondent, members of both unions assembled at the university gate for a meeting before heading home.
Zuberu Ibrahim, the chairperson of NASU at the University of Ilorin, described the strike as successful, with members of both unions fully complying with the national directive.
Zuberu stated, “Our members are fully complying with the strike. We gathered at the university gate early on Monday and then went home, and this will continue for the next seven days.”
The Public Relations Officer of SSANU in the University, Segun Alabi, reported that members completely adhered to the strike, dispersing to their homes after the meeting at the university gate on Monday.
Despite the strike, it was reported that the academic staff at the university took charge of the institution's activities to ensure that the ongoing student examinations continued without disruption.
An institution staff member informed PUNCH Online that the ongoing student exams, which began two weeks ago, were still ongoing despite the strike because “members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have taken control to prevent any disruption.”
The university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, verified that the strike did not impact the ongoing student examinations.
“We ensured that the strike did not affect the students; the management arranged for the ongoing examinations to continue,” commented Akogun.
