The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, revealed that he initially refused to construct a road in Okpoko community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state due to the fact that the House of Representatives member representing the area, Noble Igwe, belonged to the opposition party.
Soludo explained that when the house member raised concerns about the bad condition of Nwokedi Street, he dismissed the complaints because of their opposition status.
The governor made this statement while launching 12 km of roads in the Okpoko area on Monday.
He explained, "I turned down the suggestion to improve Nwokedi Street because the House member representing the area was previously in the opposition. At the time he highlighted the poor state of the road and suggested its repair, he was in the opposition, and I did not heed his advice.
"However, one day, as I was walking, someone showed me a road which the honorable member representing Ogbaru constituency 1, Noble Chukwunoso Igwe, had mentioned to me, but because he was in the opposition, I could not take action on the road at that time.
"Today, Noble Igwe is a member of our party, and we have paid attention to his concerns. When he was in the opposition, he was talking from a distance, but now, he is not only a member of our party, but he is actively engaged in discussions with us. You cannot be outside and expect to be heard; you have to come inside so that we can listen to you."
Soludo encouraged the people to back his administration.
He emphasized that he is in office because of areas like Okpoko, and assured that he will revitalize Okpoko and provide the residents with a sense of belonging.
"Even if there is no money in Anambra, we wouldn’t hesitate to use all the available funds to develop Okpoko. Okpoko must be rejuvenated. One of the reasons I became a governor was to give Okpoko its own identity," he added.
