A Lagos State High Court found and punished a criminal, Adamu Francis, with 38 years in jail for stealing from a woman, Ajoke Illiasu.
The thief stole the woman’s jewelry, watch, bank cards, money of N50,000, and exposed her while carrying a gun and iron rod.
Justice Oyindamola Ogala, who gave the decision, ruled that Francis was guilty of three charges of plotting, armed robbery, and attack brought against him by the Lagos State Government.
The accused, who was brought on charges under ID/13695c/2020, was sent to Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre for his sentence.
The prosecutor informed the court that Francis and another person (now on the run), on May 12, 2020, at around 6:15 am at Ogudu Bus Stop, Ojota, Lagos State, planned the robbery.
According to the prosecutor, the crimes violated Sections 299, 297, and 174 (a) of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.
Justice Ogala, in her ruling, stated that the evidence was very strong and confirmed that the prosecution met the burden of proof.
The judge, who verified that the convict (Francis) used weapons to carry out the robbery, mentioned that there is no law requiring the prosecution to present the weapons used in the robbery.
She explained, “The convict (Francis) was arrested in the same vehicle where the victim was robbed of her belongings.
“The indirect evidence against the convict is strong, and he is thus proven guilty of the crime charged.
“Adamu Francis, you are now given 14 years in prison for robbery on the first charge. You are given 21 years in prison for armed robbery on the second charge and three years in jail for the attack on the third charge.”
The judge also ruled that the jail term should be served at the same time starting from the first day he was detained on June 29, 2020.
