The Kano State Police Command has put strong security measures in place to deal firmly with anyone or any group planning to use the traditional Tashe culture during the last part of Ramadan to cause trouble.
Tashe is a popular dramatic entertainment in the Hausa tradition during the Ramadan month, usually starting on the 10th.
Some young people exploit the Tashe culture to create chaos among residents.
The state Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, issued the warning while speaking at a news conference at the Bompai Command’s headquarters on Monday.
He mentioned that as part of the measures taken, the command has increased monitoring and patrols in the areas where young people tend to misuse the Tashe culture for negative activities.
He stated that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical and Operational Commanders have been instructed to identify and engage with influential individuals, including the young organizers of the events, and to closely watch for any potential violence in the state.
He also stated, "Additionally, the command’s intelligence units have increased alertness to gather and act on relevant information to prevent potential security threats.
“These proactive approaches are to allow the Police Command to adequately and swiftly respond to all early warning signs of potential insecurity and maintain peace and order during and after the Ramadan period.
He mentioned that the command has invited community leaders, religious authorities, and influential youth leaders and engaged in discussions on how to best address the issue.
“We are confident that the outcome of this meeting will raise awareness about the negative consequences of engaging in activities that jeopardize public safety.
By promoting dialogue and cooperation with these stakeholders, the police command can effectively prevent insecurity incidents and encourage positive behavior among the youth.
“The police command is fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all Kano residents throughout the Ramadan month. They urge the public to pray for peace, tranquility, and economic development of the state and the nation.
The security arrangements implemented by the command during this sacred month of Ramadan demonstrate their commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of all residents during this period of high religious observance.
While requesting cooperation, support, and understanding from the public, the commissioner also appealed for increased vigilance and immediate reporting of any suspicious activities to security agencies for a prompt response.
