Deji Adeyanju, a human rights activist, has called on the Federal Government to make sure that those responsible for the deaths of 16 Nigerian Army personnel on a peace mission to the Okuama community in Delta State are brought to justice.
An officer in charge, two Majors, one Captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian lost their lives in the attack on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
The attackers reportedly hid the bodies of the deceased.
According to reports, on Wednesday, some youths from Okuama ambushed and abducted an Okoloba native, Mr Anthony Aboh.
Since January 27, 2024, neighboring communities have been in conflict over land, with Okoloba youths allegedly ambushing and killing three Okuama youths – Igho Meshack, Godspower Awusa, and Okiemute Agbabuleke – during a longstanding land dispute as they returned from Okwagbe.
In response to the incident, Adeyanju labeled the soldiers' ambush and killing as a “cowardly act” in a statement on Sunday.
He urged the authorities to do everything possible to ensure the perpetrators of this cowardly act face justice.
Expressing deep sorrow, Adeyanju extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the soldiers killed in Delta State, expressing shock and mourning over the tragic incident.
Adeyanju paid tribute to the soldiers' dedication and selflessness in serving their country and striving for peace and stability in the Okuoma community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, where they were deployed on a noble peace mission.
He prayed for the souls of the fallen heroes to find eternal peace and rest, acknowledging their bravery, dedication, and selflessness. Their service and sacrifice will forever be remembered and appreciated.
