The Senate has expressed its sympathy to the military for the death of the leader of the 181 Battalion, two Army Majors, and 13 soldiers.
Some young people attacked and killed 16 members of the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army, who were on a peace mission to the Okuoma community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta, were killed on Thursday.
In response to the event, Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Nigerian Army, offered his condolences to the service chiefs for the loss of their men in a statement he personally signed on Sunday.
He stated, “On behalf of the 10th Senate Committee on Nigerian Army, I want to offer our deepest sympathies to the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Nigerian Army, and the officers and men of Operation Delta Safe for the tragic loss of our brave personnel who were mercilessly killed by some young people during a peace mission to Okuoma Community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, 14th March 2024.
“The sacrifices made by the Commanding Officer, three officers, and 12 soldiers during this distressing incident will always be remembered. Their courage and dedication demonstrate the highest values of love for one's country, bravery, and sacrifice, and their memory will always inspire us all.”
Yar’Adua also promised the Senate's strong support for the investigations into the incident that led to the brutal killing of the soldiers.
He added, “I want to praise the quick response of the Chief of Defence Staff in ordering an immediate investigation to capture those responsible for this terrible crime. It is essential that justice is achieved and those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable for their actions.
“The Nigerian Army's unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in our country is evidence of the strength and dedication of our Armed Forces.
“The Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army fully stands with the Defence Headquarters and the Nigerian Army in seeking justice for the fallen heroes. We will spare no effort in supporting the necessary investigations and legal processes to ensure that those responsible for this crime face the full consequences of their actions.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the families of the fallen heroes, and the entire Armed Forces as we honor the sacrifice and service of our courageous personnel.”
