A player for the Super Eagles team, Taiwo Awoniyi, won't be able to play for Nigeria again after getting injured before Nottingham Forest's game against Luton Town, as confirmed by their manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Reports suggest that Awoniyi might be out until April, so he won't be able to play in Nigeria's friendly matches against Ghana and Mali later this month.
The full extent of the injury is not known, but Espirito Santo said that the injury is a huge setback for the City Ground team.
“He had a problem during the week. It is a big blow for us, a big blow. I don’t know how long he will be out for,” the tactician told the media.
Awoniyi recently recovered from a groin setback that saw him miss the 2023 Africa of Nations in Ivory Coast where Jose Peseiro’s men finished second after losing in the final to the hosts.
The former Liverpool player sustained an injury in November and was ruled out of action for three months, forcing him to miss the AFCON.
Awoniyi has been an important player for Nottingham Forest since he joined the club from Union Berlin last season but the Nigerian has seen his development marred by several injuries.
Since joining the English club, the 26-year-old has missed 27 Premier League games.
Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria on November 16, 2023, during a World Cup qualifier fixture against Lesotho.
