The launch of Disney+ in 2019 brought significant changes for Marvel Studios, although these changes may not have been immediately noticeable to fans. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, discussed the shift in an interview with the “Phase Zero” podcast, stating, “In all honesty, there was a directive to create as much as possible for Disney+ as quickly as possible.”
“However, there was a change in strategy,” Winderbaum continued. “We began spacing out our release dates, leading to delays. We are now utilizing this additional time instead of remaining idle.
“It's like allowing things to develop further. Ultimately, this will enhance the quality. Most of this is simply fallout from the business.”
Even Marvel is not immune to shifts in the entertainment industry. A part of this shift is that the studio is actively developing more projects than they are likely to produce, aligning with the traditional Hollywood approach.
“We now operate more like a traditional studio. We are developing more projects than we will actually produce,” Winderbaum explained. He also expressed enthusiasm for Marvel’s hero Nova, stating, “There are plans to develop Nova. I'm a fan of Nova and Rich Rider. I hope it comes to fruition on the screen.”
“The world is always chaotic,” Winderbaum added. “You have to work on making things happen. I would love to see a Nova show one day.”
In discussions with “Phase Zero” and in a Friday interview with Entertainment Weekly, Winderbaum addressed the unexpected departure of “X-Men ’97” showrunner Beau DeMayo, stating that, “I cannot discuss the details, but I can affirm that Beau had genuine respect and passion for these characters. He wrote what I believe are excellent scripts that inspired the rest of the team to create the amazing show that is now on-screen.” told EWDeMayo’s departure from the series occurred after he finished working on season 1 and had started on season 2, including writing scripts for the entire season. Before his dismissal, DeMayo's social media accounts were deactivated, and he was removed from scheduled press events.
