The National Judicial Council has warned that some fraudsters have been trying to cheat retired judges out of their pensions.
The council stated that the fraudsters have been constantly calling retired judges and asking for money to speed up the payment of their retirement benefits.
The NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, said in a statement on Sunday that the council is not involved in the actions of these fraudsters and advised retired judges to be cautious to avoid falling victim to these dishonest individuals.
Oye stated, “The National Judicial Council has noticed the persistent phone calls made to retired judges by some dishonest people demanding payments to expedite the processing of their retirement benefits.
“The National Judicial Council wants retired judges and the public to ignore such phone calls because the NJC would never ask for money from any judge to speed up the payment of their retirement benefits.
“The public should be careful and report such calls to the council's pension department for appropriate action.”
Nigerian retirees, including judges, are experiencing delays in receiving their pensions and gratuities.
Six retired judges from Lagos State sued the state government and the NJC in 2022 due to their delayed pensions.
The judges who filed the lawsuit were Justices Samuel Candide-Johnson, Iyabo Kasali, Olaide Olayinka, Doris Okuwobi, Titilola Ojikutu-Rhode, and Grace Onyeabo.
