Former Boston Celtics MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas has landed a new team in the NBA. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported via his X account, via his X account that Thomas has inked a 10-Day Deal with the Phoenix Suns.
Charania also explained what convinced the Suns to pick up Thomas.
“Thomas performed well in four G League games for Salt Lake City, scoring 32, 30, 34, and 34 points, making 25 of 56 three-pointers. This led to the Suns signing him for his shooting skills, playoff experience, and seasoned leadership,” Charania wrote via his X account.
Thomas had played for the Suns previously during the 2014-15 season. He was later traded to the Celtics mid-season in 2015, which marked the beginning of his success as a player.
During his time in Boston, Thomas became an MVP contender, finishing fifth in MVP voting in 2017.
This will be Thomas’s first NBA game since 2022 when he played for the Hornets.
Isaiah Thomas Acknowledges Danny Ainge & Boston
Following his debut for the Salt Lake City Stars, he expressed gratitude to former Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge for providing him with an opportunity.
“We had several conversations,” Thomas told reporters, per The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn’s X account. “Danny, he helped make this thing happen. He connected the dots. (Stars general manager) Marquis (Newman) embraced me warmly. They’re allowing me to be myself, and I’m extremely grateful.”
Thomas also mentioned that he still feels a strong connection to Boston as a city. He continues to cherish his time in Boston despite the way it concluded.
“It’s genuine affection,” Thomas said. “That Boston love is genuine. Regardless of the past, all those individuals still keep in touch with me. I’m always following Celtics games. That was a significant part of my life. It held great importance for me and my family. I appreciate the support.”
Celtics Encouraged to Reunite With Isaiah Thomas
Despite Thomas signing with the Suns, it is only for a 10-day deal. Thomas could become a free agent after the deal expires. If this happens, NBC Sports Boston’s John Tomase explained why the Celtics should bring him back.
“This is definitely more of an emotional plea rather than a rational one, and there are numerous reasons why it may not happen, but I can’t be the only one hoping for it,” Tomase wrote in a March 13 story. “With a roster spot available and limited options to fill it, why not give Thomas the farewell with Boston that he deserves?”
Tomase added that Thomas should be recognized for his contributions since he was the one who jumpstarted the success of the Celtics.
“If the Celtics fulfill their promise and win a championship this year, it would be the result of a decade-long endeavor with numerous victories and disappointments along the way. Thomas contributed to both, so let’s not overlook the role he played in the team’s resurgence.
“Even better, let’s show our appreciation.”
