A few radio presenters in Nigeria have received training in data journalism to enhance their performance at work.
The training, put together by the Broadcast Radio Master Class with backing from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, aimed to tap into the power of using data to tell stories in order to transform radio broadcasting in Nigeria.
As mentioned in a press release, Nigerian radio professionals, such as hosts, content creators, news editors, and journalists, were fully engaged in a detailed curriculum tailored to improve their storytelling skills by incorporating data journalism.
BRMC explained that the training highlighted the significance of data in creating compelling stories and provided participants with the tools and methods to make their broadcasts more captivating and effective.
“This collaboration is happening at a crucial time when the media industry is rapidly changing and putting emphasis on the importance of data-driven storytelling. Data journalism is a powerful tool that can significantly enhance the quality of content and enable broadcasters to connect with their audience in more meaningful ways,” said Fola Folayan, BRMC’s founder and Executive Director.
“Through this partnership with CJID, we are thrilled to provide participants with comprehensive training in data journalism, access to industry experts, networking opportunities, and a completion certificate,” she further stated.
She announced that the participants were introduced to the basics of data journalism, highlighting its crucial role in effective communication.
“The training program delved into storytelling using data, demonstrating how data visualizations can be seamlessly integrated into radio stories to captivate listeners and enrich broadcasting content.
“The training included sessions led by well-known data journalism experts. Sotiris Sideris, an acclaimed journalist recognized for his extensive work in collaborative and cross-border journalism, shared his perspectives on the global landscape of data-driven storytelling,” she mentioned.
She added that Kehinde Ogunyale, an experienced freelance data journalist, provided practical guidance and techniques based on his extensive experience in the field.
“Beyond gaining new skills, the program created networking opportunities for participants to connect with industry colleagues and professionals.
“We believe that this training program will not only equip radio broadcasters with the necessary skills to effectively incorporate data journalism into their broadcasts but also empower them to create more engaging and impactful content, ultimately enhancing their ability to inform and inspire their audience,” Folayan concluded.
