An unidentified man was shot and killed by suspected cult members on Thursday night in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, near the Nanka/Lumumba Diobu area between Mile 2 and Mile 3.
Reportedly, three gunmen followed the victim to a noodle shop and fatally shot him in the head.
A source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, stated that the incident occurred after 8 pm while people were outside due to the heat.
The assailants, believed to be cult members, pursued the man and shot him point-blank as he was returning home with noodles.
After the shooting, the culprits fled and residents in the area sought refuge in their homes until the police arrived to remove the victim's body, leaving blood at the scene.
Another source connected the shooting to a conflict between two factions of the Deygbam gang.
The state police command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident but refuted the notion of a cult war when approached for comment.
Iringe-Koko mentioned that an investigation has been initiated to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.
Superintendent of Police Iringe-Koko affirmed that the incident was not a cult war, but rather an attack by some cult members. She stated that efforts are underway to capture the culprits and bring them to justice.
“Investigation is ongoing to arrest the perpetrators and make them face the law.”
