Adeolu Akinwunmi, an aspirant for the Ondo State governorship election representing the People Democratic Party, has requested the party's state and National Working Committees to ensure a fair process for all the aspirants.
According to Sunday PUNCH, the Independent National Electoral Commission has set April as the month for all political parties to hold their primaries before the November governorship election.
The PDP is set to conduct its primary on April 25, 2024, with at least eight aspirants vying for the party's ticket.
Akinwunmi made these remarks on Friday in Akure, the state capital, after obtaining the party’s nomination form as the first aspirant to declare their intention to run for the state governorship election under the PDP.
He stated, “I would advise the party leaders to be unbiased towards all aspirants and provide a level playing field for everyone to compete fairly.”
Akinwumi, who opposed the idea of using a consensus mode of election for the primary, emphasized that the PDP is a party with constitutional rules and guidelines, which must be adhered to in the selection of the party's flag bearer.
Regarding zoning, Akinwunmi disclosed that the party's National Working Committee had announced that there was no official stance yet on the issue of zoning and that anyone is free to obtain the form.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State acting Chairman of the PDP, Mr Tola Alabere, remarked that the party is prepared to take over the state from the ruling party in the upcoming November governorship election. He cautioned the public against engaging in vote-buying and selling during the forthcoming poll.
“It is time for the PDP to take charge; prayers alone are not sufficient. We must take action; the practice of giving and receiving money during elections should be discontinued if we desire positive change,” he advised.
