Alumni of the University of Lagos Mass Communication department are organizing an International Communications Festival to find ways to enhance the communication profession in the country.
The festival, which is being arranged with the university's management, will take place from April 16-18, 2024.
A statement about this was provided to PUNCH Online on Thursday.
The event will also celebrate the department's transition to a faculty after the Federal Government's unbundling of Mass Communication.
In September 2023, the National Universities Commission revealed a restructured curriculum for Nigerian universities. curriculum During a meeting with stakeholders, Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the commission, emphasized that the new curriculum will be implemented in September 2023.
Maiyaki mentioned that the new CCMAS curriculum will make up 70 percent, while the remaining 30 percent will be determined by the university.
The President of UMCAA, Mr. Wale Williams, expressed that the festival aims to provide an opportunity for members to connect, share ideas, celebrate, and offer support to the department as it is upgraded.
Williams stated, “We are committed to assisting our new faculty with as many resources as possible in collaboration with the university.”
The festival will also include the second edition of the UMCAA Entrepreneurship Competition, where three winning teams and their companies will receive business startup funds, as well as a three-day product exhibition at the department.
Additionally, there will be two Town meets Gown colloquia per day on the first two days, featuring successful producer Remi Ogunpitan of IBST and Hollywood filmmaker Ose Oyamendan on day one, and veteran and former Managing Director of Independent Newspapers, Mr Ted Iwere, and Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, on day two.
The third day will host the 6th edition of the association’s Distinguished Lecture Series by Mr. Simon Kolawole, the Publisher of The Cable Online, who will speak on the topic, ‘The Dilemma between Journalism & Activism.’
The statement mentioned, “Invitations are being extended to all communication institutions in Nigeria to virtually join and take part in the lectures.
“Students at the department will have the opportunity for speed mentoring from experienced association members at different booths during the first two days. The event aims to highlight the importance of establishing effective communication channels for the country’s development,” added the UMCAA President.
