NANTICOKE — A man who is in jail for domestic assault and firearm crimes is set to go to court today for the brutal murder of his mother in Plymouth almost three months ago.
Elliot Steed, 36, is being accused of criminal homicide in the death of his mother, Ann Marie Murphy, 66, and theft for taking her car on Dec. 20, based on statements from the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office.
Murphy was discovered deceased in her home at 223 Gardner St., Plymouth.
An examination by forensic pathologist Dr. Charles Siebert revealed that Murphy was killed by multiple stab wounds and blunt head trauma, according to Coroner Jill Matthews.
Matthews determined that Murphy’s death was a homicide.
As previously reported, after Murphy was killed, Steed left Pennsylvania in his mother’s car and went to a hospital in New Jersey under a different name, where he accused his family of attempting to harm him.
Steed was subsequently captured as a fugitive by police in New Jersey on a warrant filed by Wilkes-Barre police on Dec. 20, charging him with terroristic threats, simple assault and illegal possession of a firearm for an alleged domestic disturbance with a woman at his residence on Mill Street, Wilkes-Barre, on Dec. 19, 2023.
According to court records, police in Wilkes-Barre found a loaded 9mm handgun with 12 rounds at the Mill Street residence. A woman alleged that Steed threatened her and told his mother to make funeral arrangements because Steed was planning to kill the woman and himself on Dec. 19, court records say.
Steed is set to go to court for the criminal homicide offense before District Judge Donald Whittaker in Nanticoke later today.
